How a stammering King could inspire your business

The King’s Speech film is an inspirational tale of King George VI’s impromptu succession to the throne and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch become worthy of it. Summing up his own performance as King, lead actor Coin Firth said “Sometimes all you need is a bit of reassurance to keep on track..right now this is all that stands between me and a Harley Davidson.”

The uplifting tale of King George VI’s sheer determination to overcome his stutter shows that hard work and self-confidence really can overcome life’s great obstacles. The same can be said of Colin Firth who won best actor at the Golden Globes. Film director, Tom Hooper, never doubted the actor’s ability to play the King and with a bit of hard work and reassurance Colin stepped up to the plate and delivered one of the best performances of his career.

The same parallels can be drawn with business owners. Most of us think that being a business owner means doing what you know best but actually in the end this becomes a small part of what you do. At times you’ll be forced out of your comfort zone to play the part of MD, HR, Sales, Marketing and Financial Director very often with little or no training. It’s a steep learning curve and you may feel like a fish out of water but this is perfectly natural. With a little reassurance and self-belief you will be amazed at your adaptability and new found skills.

As a business grows weighing up the cost benefits of buying in expertise to fill some of these roles can be difficult. Outsourcing specialist skills such as accountancy and taxation is a sensible business decision. Don’t kid yourself that it’s better to spend night after night doing the books and submitting your VAT Return with one eye on the business and another on the Taxman. Do what King George VI did and bring in the experts to give your business the best chance of success.
